The Yale Daily News Historical Archive provides access to digitized copies of printed issues of the Yale Daily News, the nation’s oldest college newspaper founded on January 28, 1878. The archive is open to the world and includes over 140 years of YDN reporting. In addition to the daily newspaper, the Archive also provides online access to a weekly Friday supplement called WEEKEND, a special issue each year celebrating Yale’s Indigenous, Black and AAPI communities, and other special issues throughout the academic year.

In its heyday in the 1920s, The Daily News covered a wide range of topics, from political wrongdoing (the Teapot Dome scandal) to celebrity gossip (the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication). By the 1980s, however, the Daily News had fallen on hard times and was losing readership to rival Rupert Murdoch’s The New York Post. In 1993, it was sold to real estate developer and media mogul Mortimer B. Zuckerman, who gave it a facelift in the late 1990s that focused on tabloid-style stories and emphasized online content.

The New York Daily News was headquartered in the landmark 220 East 42nd Street building, designed by architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood, between 1929 and 1995. The building, which is the model for the fictional Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films, was designated a city and national historic landmark in 2000. It is currently home to television station WPIX.
