Founded in 1851, the Yale Daily News is the oldest college daily in the United States and serves students at Yale University. The paper has a long tradition of student editors and writers who have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public life, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, Paul Steiger, Strobe Talbott and Calvin Trillin. The newspaper is financially and editorially independent.

Daily News was among the first newspapers to use wirephotography and to employ large staffs of photographers. It became a dominant tabloid in the 1920s, featuring intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip and classified ads, and an opinion section. It competed with its rival, the New York Post, in circulation battles that were fought for years to come. In the 21st century, it has struggled to retain a loyal audience as a result of declining print sales, but it remains one of the most popular newspapers in the country. The newspaper’s name is derived from its original nickname, New York’s Picture Newspaper.
